If you can get rabbit ears, one method I've seen but never tried is to run a wire along one's window frame as an antenna. Or, if you have wireless internet and a highspeed account and either (i) an agressive interpretation of Canadian copyright laws or (ii) no inhibitions against downloading to begin with, invest $20 at Radioshack and go that route.

Why am I not suprised that someone from our family doesn't know what to do with a TV..... Also- "I'm about the least patient person I know" yep.

Rabbit ears on their own are usually Good Enough for most channels, in my experience (with a couple decades of Peasant Vision behind me). You may need to adjust the antennae a bit for each channel. And be warned that the reception will change depending on where exactly you're standing; I've watched entire shows standing directly in front of the TV with my arm in the air... A couple of bits of foil folded over the ends of the antennae like flags can help, too, but not always. Good luck!
