When I was "climbing" up to Lake Louise from the hostel, I too had the same thoughts about how you walk differently on snow and ice. Its not very often (well never) that I have had to think about it. I came to the same conclusion about ice - small steps and if its up a slope you angle your feet out like a penguin to provide greater traction. For snow I just slammed my toes or heels in and worried about the frostbite later.

Actually, I haven't thought about that particular thing, but no fear I spend time thinking of other odd things. Usually on the bus. It did make me think of what i do in the snow though and your description is quite accurate.
